Spring has sprung and after eating way too many greens on my recent diet book
project I am looking for some serious savoury foods. House & Garden
commissioned the fab Matt Page and I to shoot a
Christmas feast that became a mammoth location shoot with a table
setting for 12! Big thanks go to my assistant on the day Felipe for keeping it
all together. A hectic day shooting with Pete Evans for what remains of Murdoch
Books on his next book project, Cook with Love – Mr Consistent as always. The
quality v’s quantity dilemma…hmmmmm. Feast were hoping to shoot a cover but
champagne tasting got in the way! A ‘very sexy’ assignment was shooting a ‘very
sexy’ toilet block in western Sydney for
a design client, it was deceivingly chic. Months end and Mr Morgan and I were requested to 'head north' and build a log cabin in the snow for another Sainsburys shoot due out next
year.

August 2012
Started the month with a
great shoot for Sainsburys UK but it felt like I was shooting nothing but
horses and associated bits with stables, locations and ‘horsey’ things all
month! In between shoots with Prevention, Womans Day and Feast, the wonderful
Maggie Beer graced my lens for AWW in
the Barossa on what must have been the coldest couple of days this year – it
did not help that our ‘Spring’ location was next to a busy highway either.
Finished out the month with a nice little project for ACP Books, not worked
with them for quite some time so a 10 day ‘diet’ shoot was a great gig.

JULY 2012
-
After the
apparent demise of Murdoch Books, my last project with them – ‘Pete Evans
Pizza’ was released and hit the stands looking amazing. Stylist Yael Grinham
and Creative Director Reuben Crossman made the entire book look incredible and
Pete’s pizza recipes were as tasty as you can imagine – certainly carbolicious!
Lots of positive feedback from colleagues and food editors. Great shoot this
month with Michele Cranston for AWW, her recipes are always fab to shoot, with
David Morgan on the props you have a guaranteed one-off feature. Shoots
for the likes of House & Garden,
AWW, BTS and the highlight was a Feast magazine Dinner & a Movie feature
with Stylist Berni Smithies. We stepped back in to the 20’s & 30’s
prohibition era and created some amazing images –will have to wait until the November issue to
see it!
JUNE 2012
- This month was another busy
period shooting for the usual suspects such as Masterchef, Prevention, SBS
Feast and Womans Day to name a few. Some very sad news that at the of end June
one of my favourite long time Clients – Murdoch Books will be ‘re-structuring’
in the foreseeable future and accessing the viability of printed media. They
have been a valued Client for some 15 years and I have been involved in many
fantastic projects with them over the years. Lets hope they keep publishing
books, whether they be physical or digital.

MAY 2012
- Returned from a ‘motel run’
road trip in the family truckster
to Melbourne and received my copy of the new issue of Waitrose Kitchen with my
cover shot beautifully prepped and styled by the fab Joss Herd. Thanks to
Tabitha for the sweet props and Art Direction. Collaborating with Tim @ Fibre
on my first real directorial video shoot, cannot wait for the final edit.
Prevention Magazine had me shooting a Vietnamese Pho story with Food Editor
[& health nut] Judy Davie – loving the hot and spicy flavours!
APRIL 2012
- I was fortunate to
photograph, and subsequently eat, some the worlds best smoked salmon and ocean
trout as we shot Petuna’s new website recipes with the talented Michele
Cranston and Nick Banbury. Art Director Teresa Lane gave me the low down on the
finer points of ‘tweeting’ during the shoot – thanks T! Note to self – must get
tweeting on @brettshotwhat, by the way what exactly is hootsuite anyway?!?!
MARCH 2012
- Some great shoots were on
this month for Selector Magazine with Art Director Christian Lawler and we went
all out with Eurovision kitsch for the
new SBS Feast Magazine with Stylist David Morgan – a great day for the whole crewwith the
ABBA soundtrack playing, we knew all the words.
Art Director and
Zumbo collaborator, Hugh Ford opened his new exhibition to great reviews – my
favourite – ‘Grand Opening of the Giant Scissor Factory’ - have a couple of his pieces already but this new collection is pretty sweet.
